The Oltrepò Pavese

Oltrepò Pavese is a hidden gem nestled at the crossroads of four regions, strategically significant due to its location and its pivotal role in trade and production—factors that have profoundly shaped its millennia-old history.
An exciting journey through history, culture and flavours.

History

The Romans were the first to recognize the area’s potential, taking advantage of its fertile soils and abundant watercourses to develop agriculture and livestock farming.
Throughout the centuries, Oltrepò Pavese saw the rise and fall of various dominations, yet it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the region truly began to flourish. This was largely thanks to the cultivation of vineyards and the burgeoning wine trade, which became one of the area’s most distinctive features. The construction of specialized infrastructure facilitated continuous and robust economic growth.

This region is particularly renowned for its viticulture: situated on the "Wine Parallel," it encompasses approximately 13,500 hectares of vineyards, spanning diverse climates and terrains. Oltrepò Pavese accounts for 60% of Lombardy's wine production, with a landscape defined by terraced vineyards and dotted with small, rural villages.

The Flavors

In addition to its wine, Oltrepò Pavese offers a rich array of culinary delights, many of which boast prestigious DOP and IGP certifications. The local cuisine reflects the authenticity of the land, with traditional dishes like salamelle con fagioli (sausages with beans), torta di ceci (chickpea pie), and mostarda d’uva (grape mustard), which captivate the palate while telling the stories of a life lived and traditions passed down through generations.
The region is particularly celebrated for its meat, with pork taking center stage: from ciccioli to cotechino, including salame di Varzi, liver pâté, and pancetta.
Another highlight is its artisanal cheese production, featuring the renowned Nisso di Menconico, along with more classic varieties like goat cheese, crescenza, gorgonzola, and taleggio.
Given its strong agricultural roots, Oltrepò Pavese is also home to exceptional fruit and vegetable produce: pink asparagus from Cilavegna, cherries from Bagnaria, golden onions from Voghera, red onions from Breme, borlotti beans from Gambolò, and mustard from Voghera.
Farmhouses and restaurants warmly welcome visitors with fresh, authentic products, prepared with passion and a deep respect for tradition, delivering a truly unforgettable eno-gastronomic experience.
